Your Domestic Energy Obligations

Homes that are sold or rented need to have Domestic Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs). These documents show how energy efficient the homes are, using a rating system from A to G, where A is the most efficient and G is the least.

The law requires landlords and owners of domestic properties to follow the Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) when they rent their homes. This means that they have to improve the energy efficiency of their homes to at least an EPC E rating, unless they have an exemption.

The MEES aim to reduce the energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of domestic buildings, as well as to improve their quality and comfort for the renters and buyers.
